What Powder Coating Is

Powder coating is a dry finishing process. Fine powder — pigmented resin — is sprayed onto metal with an electrostatic charge so it wraps the part evenly, then baked in an oven so it melts, flows and cures into a hard, smooth finish. There are no solvents to evaporate, and the cured coat is thicker and more even than most liquid paint. The result is a finish that resists chips, scratches, fading and weather far better than ordinary spray paint, which is why it's the standard for gates, railings, patio furniture, wheels and equipment that live outdoors.

Good powder coating starts with good prep. Most parts are cleaned and blasted to bare metal first so the powder has a clean, slightly textured surface to grip, and so there's no old paint, rust or oil trapped under the new finish. We handle that prep in-house, so your part moves from stripping to coating to curing under one roof. Call us for a quote — same-day quotes may be available.

Why This Matters Here

The Woodlands sits in a hot, humid subtropical climate. Muggy air holds moisture against bare and chipped metal most of the year, which speeds up rust on any spot where the coating has let go. Heavy rain, tropical storms and hurricanes — including the flooding from Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which left vehicles, trailers and outdoor fixtures rusting — put a lot of water against outdoor metal all at once. Strong summer sun fades and chalks ordinary paint, and the pine forest that surrounds The Woodlands drops pine sap, needles and pollen onto gates, railings and patio furniture that trap moisture against the finish.

A properly cured powder coat seals that metal off from the humidity, sun and sap, and the thicker finish resists the chips that let rust get a foothold. Practical care helps it last: rinse powder-coated items with mild soap and water and avoid harsh solvents; touch up chips before rust creeps under the finish; keep sprinklers off fresh powder coat where you can; and re-coat worn spots early instead of waiting for rust to spread. General guidance only — we'll tailor it to your part.

Is this the right fit? The right method is decided after we see the item or surface. Some items may not suit powder coating — thin sheet metal, plastic, glass and rubber can warp or outgas, and cast parts may need a different approach. Send photos and we'll tell you straight.

Powder Coating Colors & Finishes

A powder coat finish is what you see and feel once the powder cures. Gloss is shiny and reflective; satin is a soft sheen that hides fingerprints and wear; matte is flat and low-glare; textured adds a rough feel that hides minor surface flaws and grips well; metallic has a sparkle from metal flakes in the powder; candy is a translucent color over a metallic base for depth; and a clear powder protects a bare or polished metal surface without adding color. Most colors are available across these finishes, so you can pick a look and a sheen separately.

Single Stage vs Two-Stage Powder Coat

Single stage is one coat of powder, no clear — a solid color applied and cured in one pass. It's the most common and most economical choice for everyday metal, gates, railings and patio furniture. Two-stage adds a base coat plus a clear or color coat on top, which is how candy, metallic and chrome-look finishes get their depth and shine. Two-stage costs more because it takes more powder, more masking and two cure cycles, but it's what gives those premium finishes their look.

Custom Powder Coating & Color Matching

We do custom powder coating and can color-match to many standards. If you have a specific color in mind — a company color, a match to an existing part, a brand standard — send us a sample or a code and we'll find the closest powder. Custom colors and small-batch runs may cost a little more and take a little longer, and we'll tell you that up front.

Powder Coat Aluminum

Aluminum takes powder coating beautifully when it's properly prepped. We clean, etch and blast the surface so the powder has a profile to grip, then cure it at a temperature that won't warp the part. Powder coated aluminum is a great call for patio furniture, railings, marine parts and architectural metal — it seals the surface against corrosion and keeps the metal looking clean. Tell us what the part is and how it's used and we'll pick the right powder and cure for it.

Commercial Powder Coating

We take on commercial powder coating for businesses, contractors and production runs — brackets, fabricated parts, signage, architectural metal and repeat batches of components. A powder coat is a durable, consistent finish for parts that have to look good and hold up in service. For larger runs the cost per piece comes down, and we can schedule batches to keep your project moving. Send drawings, samples or a description of the run and we'll quote it.

Powder Coating vs Paint

A cured powder finish is thicker and tougher than most liquid paint, with no solvents, and it resists chips, scratches and fading better. Paint still makes sense for a quick touch-up, a color match on a budget, or a surface that can't go in an oven — but for outdoor metal in this climate, powder coat usually outlasts paint. We'll tell you straight which fits your job.

A Note on Mobile Powder Coating

Blasting and prep can be done on-site, but the powder itself has to cure in an oven, so the coating is done in the shop. "Mobile powder coating" in the sense of curing at your location isn't possible — there's no portable oven for a proper cure. If on-site prep makes sense for a large item, we can blast it where it sits and bring the parts in for coating.

Powder Coating Cost & Prices

What drives the cost? The size and number of parts (more powder and oven space for larger items), how much old coating and rust has to come off, the surface or substrate, the finish and number of coats (two-stage costs more than single stage), your color choice, any masking, repairs, and travel distance for mobile prep. Custom colors and small batches may add a little. We give you a real number after we see the job.

Powder Coating FAQs

Is powder coating heat resistant?

A cured powder finish handles everyday heat well — engine compartments, BBQ frames and outdoor metal in the Texas sun all hold up. The exact rating depends on the powder, the substrate and the use, so we won't quote a specific temperature. If your part sees real heat, tell us about it and we'll choose the right powder for the job.

How long does powder coat last?

A properly prepped and cured powder coat lasts a long time outdoors, and it resists chips, scratches and fading far better than ordinary paint. The real life depends on the part, the environment and how it's cared for, so we won't promise an exact number. Rinse it with mild soap and water and touch up chips before rust creeps under the finish and it keeps looking good for years.

Can aluminum be powder coated?

Yes. Aluminum takes powder coat very well when it's properly cleaned and prepped first. We blast and etch the surface so the powder has a profile to grip, then cure it at the right temperature for aluminum so it doesn't warp. Powder coated aluminum is common for patio furniture, railings, marine parts and architectural metal.

Can you paint powder coated aluminum?

You can repaint powder coated aluminum, but it takes the right prep — the old surface has to be cleaned, scuffed or stripped so the new coating sticks. In most cases a fresh blast and re-coat with new powder gives a tougher, longer-lasting result than painting over it. We'll tell you straight which makes sense for your piece.
